Small Acts of Kindness ( One day Challenge)

I took up a one day challenge where in I would have to show acts of kindness to someone and write what I learnt from it. One thing I’ve learned over the last few hours is that true acts of kindness come from a heart willing to be kind. Although I couldn’t really go out and give anyone anything or do anything out of the ordinary because I had to be a part of various events throughout my roller coaster day, I did do small acts of kindness for my mom and my brother who had a really rough day. Small acts like — doing their bed, making my own breakfast, buying groceries and vegetables for Mum and being the chauffeur for my brother did make a small difference to their weekend. Sure, they weren’t as needy as most people suffering from serious issues but small acts of kindness which I don’t usually do, did in fact made a difference to their day.

That being said, by the time I do go out and make a bigger difference to society, my time would be up for this one day challenge. I told my parents about it and they said something that really stood out to me. My mom said and I quote, “To make a change you have to go out of your way and make that change. An opportunity to make a difference doesn’t come your way.”

My parents were happy with the idea and they told me they’d also help me help someone. We left our house for dinner with my mom saying “Let’s go look for opportunities to display acts of kindness”. That is the real essence of an act of kindness. By the time I do put this up I would have done a deed but I wouldn’t have time to elaborate.

Throughout the day I felt compelled to do this because I took it up as an challenge and it had to be done. But as the day progressed, I realised that a heart that doesn’t want to truly help will only help with a self serving attitude. And I must confess, most of the day was driven with this self serving attitude.

A serving heart must be selfless and serve out of love and genuine care for people. I know that what I achieved today and what I learned may have been dwarfed by what others learned and did but personally, this challenge was an eye opener that taught me an important lesson on how small acts of kindness can go a long way. I’m very grateful that I got to learn this life lesson.
